Richard Brice

About me......

After university and a short period where I worked as a music and hi-fi journalist, I started my working life as a development engineer in several of Britain’s principal broadcast companies. I worked for Cox Electronics on vision switchers, AVS, on motion-compensated standards converters and for Pro-Bel where I designed the Freeway routing switchers. For this last product-range, which featured ground-breaking digital-audio core routing, I was cited in Post Update magazine as one of the Twelve disciples of TV design. I was also responsible for part of the development of AVESCO's first product in the medical imaging field and for the installation of the beta-site version in the VA Hospital in New York.

I spent 10 years with Miranda Technologies Inc., a leading broadcast electronics company serving as the company’s MD for Europe, and as President of Miranda Asia, based in Hong Kong.

Since returning to live in the Loire Valley in France, I started Phædrus Audio, a hardware audio company now well-known for its active phono cartridges, precision preamplifiers and parts for vintage microphones and a software company Pspatial Audio which is responsible for the Stereo Lab product.

Extended stereophony

I have presented seminars on my original work in extended stereophony, to the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at Southampton University, Denmark Radio and the Surrey University Tonmeister course. The stereo enhancement system FRANCINSTIEN has sold world-wide and is used on many records and film scores. (The client list includes: Queen, David Bowie, Robert Fripp, and Bernard Herrmann amongst others.)

I have also demonstrated 3D technologies in Hollywood and theme-parks across the USA. I gave a series of lectures on Sound Engineering at Oxford Brookes University as a Visiting Fellow before I left to live in Hong Kong.

Music composition

I studied composition privately when still at school studying harmony, counterpoint and orchestration and took lessons in composition under Peter Sandar and electronic music composition at the City Literary Institute when in my early twenties. Perfect Pitch Music released nearly two dozen tapes and CD's released on two major record labels - CYP Productions and Tring International. I have over 300 original songs and arrangements most of which are published by CYP Music Ltd.

I acted as musical director on the West End run of Mumsie's Christmas Escapade and co-produced the show's cast recording with its author, American actor, Eric Loren. More recent commissions have included music for commercial and corporate video projects and films.

Author

I am the author of five books on music electronics, digital television and virtual reality.
